He served as a mathematics professor there until 1940 when he joined the Ministry of Supply during World War II. After the war, he became an assistant professor and later a full professor at Imperial College London, eventually specializing in the history and applications of mathematics. He is known for his work on the philosophical foundations of cosmology.
