Günter Eich was a German author, poet, and playwright born in 1907 in Lebus and died in 1972 near Salzburg, Austria. He studied commerce and Chinese language in Berlin and Paris, becoming a freelance writer in 1932. Eich participated in the war and was imprisoned for a year in the United States. He married Austrian writer Ilse Aichinger in 1952. He received the Group 47 prize in 1950 and an award for his radio play 'Dreams' in 1952.
