He earned his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart in 1965, followed by research at Bell Laboratories and the Max Planck Institute. He became a professor at the University of Hamburg in 1975, where he developed the solid-state laser group. He served as the president of the German Physical Society and has been involved with various institutions including Siemens AG and the European Academy of Sciences. He has also engaged in economics.
