Harry Hammond Hess was an American geologist and a United States Navy officer during World War II. He is considered one of the founders of the theory of plate tectonics, having gained recognition for his theory of sea-floor spreading. Hess focused on the relationship between island arc curvature and gravity anomalies, as well as serpentinite and peridotite rocks. He proposed that heat transfer in the Earth's mantle is the driving force behind these processes. His work laid the conceptual groundwork for the development of plate tectonics theory.
