Headman Msongelwa Shabalala (1945-1991) was a prominent member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a famous South African choral group founded by his brother, Joseph. Born in Ladysmith, Headman joined the group in 1960, contributing his distinct bass voice. He became known for unique vocal techniques like low gruffs and clicking sounds. By the early 1990s, he was one of the remaining original members as the group gained international fame. Tragically, he was murdered in December 1991 in a racially charged incident.
