Eteläpää furthered his education in theater while assisting Eino Salmelainen at Tampereen Työväen Teatteri and studied in foreign institutions. He worked as a film critic at Ilta-Sanomat and later as the head of the culture department at Uusi Suomi. He was also involved in translating plays and conducted research on wartime theaters during retirement.
