She spent her childhood connected to the Edmonton Corps of The Salvation Army and was a teacher before training as a full-time Officer. Helen married Shaw Clifton, the 18th General of The Salvation Army, in 1967. She held a Bachelor of Arts degree in English language and literature and a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education. She passed away on June 14, 2011.
