Helen Mamayaok Maksagak was a Canadian politician and the first woman and Inuk to serve as the commissioner of the Northwest Territories. Born on April 15, 1931, near Bernard Harbour, she made significant contributions to Canadian politics. She also became the first commissioner of Nunavut, a territory established in 1999. Maksagak's legacy is notable for her pioneering role in Canadian governance and representation of Indigenous peoples. She passed away on January 23, 2009, in Cambridge Bay.
