Helios Mendiburu is a German-Spanish engineer and local politician born on February 24, 1936, in Madrid. After the reunification in 1990, he became the first freely elected district mayor of the Berlin district Friedrichshain, serving until the year 2000. He spent two and a half years in prisons and forced labor camps in East Germany due to 'boycott agitation' between 1957 and 1959.
