Hiroaki Kitano is a Japanese computer scientist and systems biologist born in 1961 in Tokyo Prefecture. He is known for developing Aibo and the two-legged robot Qrio, and founding the RoboCup competitions in 1997. Kitano studied physics at the International Christian University and earned his Ph.D. in computer science from Kyoto University in 1991. He worked at NEC's Software Research Laboratory and served as a senior researcher at Sony Laboratories. He leads the Disease Modeling Group at RIKEN and has held various professorships while receiving the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award in 1993.
