Ib Madsen, born on April 12, 1942, in Copenhagen, is a Danish mathematician who has been a professor of mathematics at the University of Copenhagen since 2008. He earned his cand.scient. degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1965 and his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1970. Prior to his current position, he was a professor at Aarhus University from 1983 to 2008. Madsen's primary research interests lie in algebraic and geometric topology, notably proving Mumford's conjecture with Michael Weiss in 2002. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
