Leo van der Zalm (1942–2002) was a Dutch poet known for his unconventional style. He was a distinctive figure in the Amsterdam Balloon Society and started his career by printing poetry on an old printing press aboard his boat. He studied Dutch language and literature but left before graduating, later completing a thesis on perceptions of vagrancy in the 17th century. His novel 'Backers branie' highlights a forgotten episode of Dutch history in India. He supported young poets and was involved in literary festivals before passing away due to meningitis.
