Jamake Highwater, born Jackie Marks on February 14, 1931, was an American writer of Eastern European Jewish descent who falsely claimed to be Cherokee. He used the pseudonym 'Jamake Highwater' and authored over 30 books covering music, art, poetry, and history. His notable works include the Newbery Honor-winning children's novel 'Anpao: An American Indian Odyssey' and 'The Primal Mind', which inspired a PBS documentary. Highwater was revealed as an imposter in 1984 but continued to be viewed as a Native American figure. He died on June 3, 2001.
