In the early 1950s, he produced the first animated short film in East Germany, 'Die Geschichte vom unbesiegbaren Hasen,' featuring Serbian subtitles. Hempel later worked as a private film producer and created over 60 films, including the well-known animation 'Als es noch Wassermänner gab' (1991).
