Jan Hempel was a Serbian director born on February 20, 1917, in Bautzen, known as a pioneer of East German animated film. He initially trained as a decorative painter before studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. After World War II, he was one of the founding members of the Circle of Serbian Artists. In the early 1950s, he produced the first animated short film in East Germany, 'Die Geschichte vom unbesiegbaren Hasen,' featuring Serbian subtitles. Hempel later worked as a private film producer and created over 60 films, including the well-known animation 'Als es noch Wassermänner gab' (1991).
