Janet Parker (March 1938 - September 11, 1978) was an English medical photographer and the last person to die from smallpox. She contracted the virus due to a laboratory accident at the University of Birmingham's medical school. Parker worked in the anatomy department and was inadvertently exposed to a strain of the smallpox virus being developed in a research lab. Her death led to the suicide of the head of microbiology, Professor Henry Bedson, who took his life after expressing remorse over failing the trust of his colleagues and friends.
