Jari Kalevi Niemelä (December 26, 1957 – July 5, 2022) was a Finnish biologist and rector of the University of Helsinki. He obtained his PhD in 1988 focused on the beetles of the Åland Islands. Niemelä held various academic positions, including professor and dean at the University of Helsinki, with interests in urban ecology and forest biodiversity. He served as chairman of WWF Finland's board and was the editor of two significant books. Niemelä was appointed rector in April 2018, but his tenure was affected by serious health issues, leading to his resignation in February 2022.
