Jean Degottex was a prominent French painter born on February 25, 1918, in Sathonay-Camp, France, and died on December 9, 1988, in Paris. A self-taught artist, he began painting while living in North Africa at age 21. Initially influenced by Fauvism, he soon turned to abstract art. Awarded the Prix Kandinsky in 1951, he was noted for his contributions to Lyrical Abstraction and Action Painting. His use of Asian materials and incorporation of calligraphic gestures distinguished his work. He became famous for his 'Métasphères' monochrome paintings featuring universal circles.
