Jean Rouch was a French filmmaker and anthropologist, considered one of the founders of cinéma vérité in France. His filmmaking technique, developed over more than sixty years in Africa, was characterized by the concept of shared anthropology. Influenced by surrealism in his early twenties, Rouch blurred the lines between fiction and documentary in many of his films, creating a new style known as ethnofiction. He was viewed as one of his own by French New Wave filmmakers, and his film 'Moi, un noir' pioneered the jump cut technique later popularized by Jean-Luc Godard.
