Following the Congo's independence, he returned to Belgium in August 1960. Initially supported by a government program, he eventually sought employment and decided to become a writer, studying Germanic languages at the University of Brussels. Geeraerts contributed significantly to Belgian literature until his passing on May 11, 2015.
