John A. Thorpe is an American mathematician born on February 29, 1936, in Lewiston, Maine, known for his work in differential geometry. He obtained his Bachelor's degree from MIT in 1958 and a Master's degree from Columbia University in 1959, completing his PhD in 1963 under James Eells. Thorpe served as a Moore Instructor at MIT and held various academic positions, including at Haverford College and the State University of New York. Notably, he contributed to an inequality regarding topological invariants with Nigel Hitchin, and served as Executive Director of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics from 1998 to 2001.
