John Charles Preston Besford was an English competitive swimmer born on 30 January 1911 in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire. He specialized in backstroke and represented Great Britain in the Olympics and European championships during the 1930s. Besford won the bronze medal at the 1930 British Empire Games and the silver medal in 1934. He was also European 100-meter backstroke champion in 1934. Post World War II, he taught dentistry in China and later practiced in Brighton. He was appointed OBE in 1975 for his contributions to the British community in Tokyo.
