John D. Silva (1920-2012) was the chief engineer for KTLA-TV in Los Angeles, known for inventing the telecopter in 1958, which was the first helicopter equipped with a TV camera. Born in San Diego, he served as a radar operator in the Navy during WWII before joining Paramount Pictures and later KTLA, where he worked for 21 years. His innovative work earned him an Emmy and over 40 awards for live event coverage. He left KTLA in 1978 to work as an electronics design consultant and passed away in 2012.
