John David Duty was an American executed in Oklahoma for first-degree murder. Born on April 25, 1952, he was the first in the U.S. to be executed using pentobarbital, a drug usually for euthanizing animals, after a nationwide shortage of sodium thiopental. He was convicted of strangling a fellow inmate in 2001 while serving a life sentence for crimes committed in 1978. Duty did not contest his charges and expressed a willingness to kill again. His appeals regarding execution methods were denied, and he was executed on December 16, 2010.
