John E. Walker is a British chemist and molecular biologist born in 1941. He studied at the University of Oxford, where he obtained his PhD in 1969. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1997 for his work in enzymatic mechanisms related to ATP synthesis. Initially, he analyzed protein sequences and later uncovered details of the variable genetic code in mitochondria. In 1978, he began applying chemical methods to membrane proteins. He shared the Nobel Prize with American chemist Paul Boyer, along with Danish chemist Jens Skou for unrelated research.
