He studied at the University of Glasgow and received his Bachelor's degree in 1965, later obtaining his PhD from the University of California, San Diego, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1970. As a professor at MIT, he focused on the quantitative analysis of ocean chemistry processes and investigated the transfer of chemical elements in and out of oceans, using water samples from various remote locations.
