John McNeile Hunter was an American physicist and chemist born on January 23, 1901. He was the third African American to receive a PhD in physics, achieving this in 1937 from Cornell University. Hunter spent his entire career at Virginia State College, where he established the physics department and served as its first chair, teaching and mentoring almost 4,000 students. His research focused on thermionics and he was involved in military training during WWII. Hunter was a recognized leader in promoting science education at historically Black colleges.
