John Rex Whinfield was a British chemist born on February 16, 1902, in Sutton and passed away on July 6, 1966, in Dorking, Surrey. He is best known for inventing the plastic PET and the synthetic textile fiber Terylene, the first polyester fiber. After completing his chemistry degree at Cambridge University in 1922, he worked with Charles Frederick Cross and discovered a method to stabilize polyester with a benzene ring. He patented his findings in 1941, which led to the development of Terylene. Whinfield concluded his career as the head of the Synthetic Fibers section at ICI before retiring in 1963.
