After completing his education at Marshall University and joining the Army through the ROTC program in 1958, he held various infantry officer positions, commanding units during the Vietnam War and in South Korea. Corns rose through the ranks, serving in key positions, including as commander of the United States Army Pacific from July 1991 to September 1993, and retired as a lieutenant general. He published several books and died on May 12, 2020.
