Josefina Niggli (1910–1983), originally named Josephine, was a Mexican-born Anglo-American playwright and novelist known for her works addressing Mexican-American issues prior to the Chicano movement. She was a pioneering Mexican American author writing in English about Mexican themes and championed progressive views on gender, race, and ethnicity. Her literary contributions laid the groundwork for future Chicana feminists like Gloria Anzaldúa. Niggli is recognized as a significant bridge between Mexican and Anglo heritage and has a theater named in her honor at Western Carolina University.
