Joseph Flummerfelt was an American conductor born on February 24, 1937, in Vincennes and passed away on March 1, 2019, in Indianapolis. He taught at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, for three decades. Flummerfelt co-founded the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1977 and served as its director of choral activities from 1977 to 2013. He was also the master of the choir at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Italy from 1971 to 1993. The New York Times noted his significant but often unseen role in American classical music.
