Josephat Njuguna Karanja was the fifth Vice-President of Kenya from 1988 until his resignation in 1989 amidst a vote of no confidence. A former High Commissioner to Britain and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, he is remembered for his strict leadership style and advocacy for higher education, particularly for women. Karanja faced political challenges, including arrest in 1993 for allegedly inciting public dissent against President Moi's government, an act many condemned as a suppression of opposition. He earned a PhD in history from Princeton University.
