She studied at the Industrial Art College, graduating in 1954. Schäffer spent two years in a military theater troupe and worked on stage costumes in various prominent theaters. She also taught for four years at an art college. Her notable works include costumes for plays by Shakespeare and operas by Verdi, earning multiple awards, including the Kossuth Prize in 1997.
