Justin Orvel Schmidt (March 23, 1947 – February 18, 2023) was an American entomologist known for his work on bee behavior and defense mechanisms in insects and arachnids. He co-authored the book 'Insect Defenses: Adaptive Mechanisms and Strategies of Prey and Predators' and wrote 'Sting of the Wild.' Schmidt gained fame for creating the Schmidt sting pain index, which measures the pain caused by insect stings. In 2015, he received the Ig Nobel Prize in Physiology and Entomology for his contributions to this research.
