Kan'ichi Kanegae (born January 22, 1931) is a Japanese politician and businessman who served as the mayor of Shimabara for three terms. Originally involved in the family-run inn, Kokkō-ya, he became widely recognized during the 1991 volcanic eruption of Mount Unzen, known as the 'Bearded Mayor' due to his beard grown as a vow for volcanic calm. After retiring in 1992, he engaged in national lectures based on his disaster experiences and has been awarded for his efforts, including the Order of the Rising Sun.
