Karel "Charlie" Soukup, born on January 22, 1951, in Prague, is a Czech underground singer-songwriter known for his sarcastic songs commenting on the political and social climate of Czechoslovakia. He faced imprisonment for his lyrics and became an influential figure in the Charter 77 movement. After a challenging life under communist suppression, he emigrated with his family to France, and later to Australia, where he has lived a more reclusive life. In 2020, he received an award for his courageous stances during the communist regime.
