Karen B. Johnson was an influential American politician and activist born on May 12, 1942. She made history by becoming the first woman elected to the Schenectady City Council in 1975. Johnson further solidified her legacy by serving as the first female mayor of Schenectady, New York, from 1983 until 1991. Throughout her tenure, she was a pioneering figure in local government, and remains the only woman to have held the mayoral position in Schenectady as of the time of her passing on June 10, 2019.
