Kō Tanimura (谷村 晃) was a Japanese musicologist born on April 27, 1927, in Hyōgo Prefecture. He graduated from Kyoto University in 1951 and studied at the University of Munich from 1963 to 1965. In 1968, he earned a Doctor of Literature degree for his dissertation on the structure of Viennese Classical music at Kwansei Gakuin University. Tanimura held professorships at Kwansei Gakuin University and Osaka University, retiring in 1993, and later served as a professor at Osaka University of Arts. He also chaired the Japanese Musicology Society from 1983 to 1989.
