He served as the president of Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan's leading newspapers, and held leadership roles within various organizations, including as a former president of the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association and as the chairman of the Japan Cancer Society. Akiyama is from Soja City, Okayama Prefecture, and has also been an outside director at TV Asahi and a senior advisor to the Japan High School Baseball Federation.
