Madalyn Murray O'Hair (April 13, 1919 – September 29, 1995) was an American activist who advocated for atheism and the separation of church and state. She founded American Atheists in 1963 and served as its president until 1986. O'Hair is best known for the landmark case Murray v. Curlett, which challenged mandatory prayer and Bible reading in public schools, ultimately leading to a Supreme Court ruling that deemed such practices unconstitutional. She disappeared in 1995 along with her son and granddaughter, and was later confirmed to have been murdered.
