Manfred Schönfelder was a highly decorated Waffen-SS officer during World War II, holding the rank of SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel). Born on March 18, 1912, in Hellerau near Dresden, he joined the SS in 1933 and became an officer within the Deutschland regiment. He commanded the 12th Machine Gun Company during the invasions of Poland and France and later led the SS Germania regiment during Operation Barbarossa. He received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his efforts at the Eastern Front and surrendered to American forces in 1945.
