He was born in Rome and immigrated to the United States in 1908, mastering around 30 languages and familiarizing himself with over 100. Pei was a professor at Columbia University, authoring more than 50 books, including bestsellers like 'The Story of Language' and 'The Story of English,' and promoted Esperanto in education around the world.
