He has been influential in the development and popularization of various internet technologies since the late 1980s. McCahill led the development of the Gopher protocol, a predecessor to the World Wide Web, and was involved in establishing the standard for Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) alongside Tim Berners-Lee. Additionally, he developed POPMail, an early email client that significantly impacted later email clients and the promotion of graphical user interfaces in internet technology. He also coined the term 'surfing the internet.'
