Markus, originally named Leonid Leontinevitsh Schavikin, was a prominent bishop and monk associated with Valamo Monastery. Born on May 28, 1910, in Raivola, he became a monk in 1934 and served in various roles during WWII. He immigrated to the U.S. in the 1950s, where he became a bishop in San Francisco. Known for his unique sense of humor, Markus maintained connections with Finnish friends throughout his life. He returned to Finland, settling in Lahti, where he passed away on January 13, 1989, and was buried at the new Valamo cemetery.
