Degawa has held various academic positions including researcher at the Tokyo Institute of Biochemistry, associate professor at Tohoku University School of Pharmacy, and professor at Shizuoka Prefectural University, where he also served as dean of students and vice president. He is currently a professor emeritus at Shizuoka Prefectural University.
