Maurine Stuart (1922-1990), also known as Ma Roshi or Mother Roshi, was a pioneering Canadian Rinzai Zen rōshi and one of the first female Zen masters to teach in the United States. She became the president and spiritual director of the Cambridge Buddhist Association in 1979. Stuart received her teaching title from Soen Nakagawa in 1982 during an informal ceremony, becoming one of the few women to achieve this honor in Zen. She accepted the roshi title yet refrained from declaring herself a Dharma heir or lineage holder.
