He trained as a minister in the Augsburg Lutheran Seminary in Mexico City and returned to El Salvador in 1972, overseeing Lutheran communities in San Salvador. He engaged in ecumenical dialogue with Archbishop Oscar Romero until Romero's assassination, advocating for his memory in Lutheran communities. Throughout the 1980s, he faced threats from paramilitary death squads and became the first bishop of the Salvadoran Lutheran Synod in 1986. He promotes social work and peace initiatives, focusing on human rights and historical memory.
