Frederick Michael Burdekin is a British civil engineer born on February 5, 1938, in Hawarden, North Wales. He studied engineering at the University of Cambridge and spent fifteen years in the industry before becoming a professor of structural engineering at UMIST from 1977 until his retirement in 2002. His research focused on welding, crack propagation in metals, and non-destructive testing methods for steel structures. He received the Gold Medal from the Institution of Structural Engineers in 1997 and was appointed OBE in 2008 for his contributions to nuclear safety.
