Michael P. Anderson was an American United States Air Force officer and NASA astronaut born on December 25, 1959. He was the Payload Commander and First Pilot responsible for scientific experiments on board the Space Shuttle Columbia. Tragically, Anderson and six of his colleagues lost their lives in the Columbia disaster when the shuttle disintegrated during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. After his death, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
