Michael Norman Tizard Cottell was a prominent British civil engineer born in Hampshire in 1931. He contributed significantly to civil engineering, particularly in computer-aided design, developing the VALOR program for road design. Cottell served as a county surveyor in Northamptonshire and Kent, managing substantial budgets and staff. An active member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, he served as president from 1992 to 1993. Cottell was awarded the OBE and was a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, dedicating much of his life to advancing civil engineering in the UK until his death in 2014.
